Dashboards you see in the wild are pretty (probably), but they don’t get used. That’s why we have graveyards full of dashboards.
Why? They don’t answer real questions that the business needs to know.
More important than pretty charts or coordinating colors is information that drives action.
- Is something outside of tolerance?
- How do I find that out?
- How do I fix it before my boss sees it?
When you answer these questions for your business application, your “dashboard” will get used.
The other important factor? Everyone has the same data translated to their level. That means that the front line employees are looking at the same data and being tracked by the same metric that’s on the executive scorecard.
When everyone is looking at the same thing, there’s alignment. And the business moves. Fast. Towards their goal.
